It was definitely tasteless but not harmless, and in fact was illegal in some 1st world countries.

I'm 110% for Darwinism, but that completely ends at encouraging or facilitating another person to end their own life. Especially so when the person in question has identified themself as being suicidal.

Enticing someone to commit suicide who is already vulnerable to commit suicide is what is at issue. Especially when you are recruiting others via suggestion or direction to perform that task.
